Insulin Resistance: What It Is, How to Recognize It and What You Can Do
More than one in four adults has insulin resistance and most have no idea. There is no dramatic symptom, no obvious warning. Most people feel a little tired, maybe carry some extra weight around the middle and assume that is simply part of getting older. It is not. Insulin resistance is a condition your body develops over time and one it can reverse. Catching it early makes a real difference. This article explains what insulin resistance actually is, how to recognize it from everyday symptoms, why it develops and most importantly what the evidence says you can do about it.
What Is Insulin Resistance?
Every time you eat carbohydrates, your blood sugar rises. Your pancreas responds by releasing insulin a hormone whose job is to act like a key, unlocking your cells so glucose can enter and be used for energy. In a healthy system, the key fits the lock perfectly. Glucose moves into your cells, your blood sugar normalizes and you feel energized after a meal.
In insulin resistance, the lock stops responding to the key. Your cells, particularly in the liver, muscles and fat tissue become less sensitive to insulin’s signal. The pancreas compensates by producing more insulin, but over time even higher insulin levels are not enough to do the job efficiently. Glucose accumulates in the bloodstream instead of entering your cells. Your liver begins converting the excess into fat. Energy delivery to your cells becomes unreliable.
This is why insulin resistance does not feel like a disease. It feels like fatigue. It feels like being unable to lose weight despite trying. It feels like low energy in the afternoon and constant cravings. The problem is already there long before any test flags it.
Five Signs You Might Have It
Insulin resistance rarely announces itself clearly. These five patterns are worth paying attention to:
1. Fatigue after meals. If you consistently feel tired or sluggish one to two hours after eating especially after carbohydrate-heavy meals your cells may not be efficiently absorbing glucose. The energy is in your blood, not in your cells.
2. Sugar cravings, especially in the afternoon. Persistent cravings for sweet or starchy foods, particularly in the mid-afternoon slump, are often driven by unstable blood sugar. Your brain is signaling for quick energy because the normal regulation system is working poorly.
3. Belly fat that doesn’t respond to diet or exercise. The fat around your internal organs is both a result and a cause of insulin resistance. If your belly stays stubbornly wide despite sustained effort, this is a likely reason.
4. Brain fog and afternoon flatness. Difficulty concentrating or a foggy feeling that hits predictably in the afternoon is often a sign that your brain is not getting glucose efficiently. Your brain is one of the most energy-hungry organs in your body.
5. Fasting blood sugar creeping upward on routine tests. You are not diabetic. Your doctor has not flagged anything alarming. But your fasting glucose has been slowly going up over the past few years. This trend, even within the “normal” range, is one of the earliest detectable signals of insulin resistance.

Why Does It Develop?
Insulin resistance does not develop overnight. It builds up slowly over years, through four connected causes.
The liver is usually the first organ affected. Eating too much especially sugar, white bread and processed food causes fat to build up inside the liver. A fatty liver stops listening properly to insulin’s signal, so blood sugar stays high even when you have not eaten.
Muscle tissue is the body’s largest glucose consumer. When you move little during the day, your muscles become less efficient at absorbing glucose. Less movement means insulin has to work harder to get the same job done.
Visceral fat is not just passive storage. Unlike the fat just under your skin, belly fat releases chemicals that actively make it harder for insulin to do its job throughout the body. Sleep deprivation and chronic stress complete the picture. Even one bad night of sleep measurably reduces how well insulin works the next day. The stress hormone cortisol raises blood sugar as part of the body’s alarm response. When you are under constant stress, your blood sugar stays elevated and your insulin system slowly wears down.
What You Can Do
The science on reversing insulin resistance is clear. Four things consistently work, listed here from strongest to weakest evidence.
Movement is the single most powerful intervention. Regular moderate activity — brisk walking, cycling, swimming — lowers blood sugar within hours and improves how your body responds to insulin within weeks. When your muscles move, they absorb glucose directly without needing insulin at all. This is why exercise works even when your insulin system is struggling.
Diet matters, but the focus should be on reduction rather than perfection. Cutting back on sugar and ultra-processed food reduces the amount your body has to deal with. Eating more protein and fiber slows how fast glucose enters your blood and keeps you fuller longer — making it easier to eat less without strict rules.
Sleep is non-negotiable. Research consistently shows that sleeping fewer than seven hours a night reduces insulin sensitivity, increases appetite and promotes belly fat accumulation. No supplement or diet change fully compensates for chronic poor sleep.
Weight loss, specifically around the belly, produces dramatic improvements in insulin sensitivity. The good news is the threshold is lower than most people expect: losing just 5 to 7 percent of your body weight is enough to meaningfully reverse early insulin resistance in most people. You do not need to reach an ideal weight. You just need to move in the right direction.

A Note on Berberine
Of all the supplements studied for blood sugar and insulin sensitivity, berberine has the strongest evidence base. Multiple meta-analyses show it can reduce fasting glucose, lower HbA1c and improve insulin sensitivity — results comparable to some pharmaceutical interventions.
It works through a different mechanism than lifestyle changes, which is why some people combine the two.

The clinical research was done primarily in people with type 2 diabetes, so effects in early insulin resistance may be more modest
Berberine interacts with metformin and blood thinners — if you take either, check with your doctor first
